|Who We Are
Second Chance Dobes Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Clinton, Michigan. Our mission is to foster, rehabilitate and help find Doberman Pinschers new homes, giving them a second chance on life. We provide any medical assistance needed to every dog that comes into our program along with spaying and neutering.
History of Second Chance Dobes
Founder Arda Barber has been rescuing Dobermans Pinchers since 1981. Her mission to help the breed began with a visit to a Humane Society to pick up a boxer for a friend. Also at the shelter were four beautiful Dobermans slated that day for euthanasia if homes were not found for them. Without thinking twice, Arda loaded the four Dobes and Boxer into her van and brought them home to safety.
Since that day, Arda has rescued over 3,000 Dobes and over 1,000 dogs of other breeds.
Second Chance Dobes is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and placement of Doberman Pinschers. We are soley run by volunteers who have the time, patience, and the love of Dobes needed to make this effort possible.
Adopting a Friend
Second Chance receives Dobermans from animal shelters, veterinarians, other rescue groups, and owners. We do not turn away any Dobe in need, except in extreme cases of overcrowding.
The dobes that come to us at Second Chance are fostered and cared for at our volunteer-run kennel facility until a suitable home is found for them. Our volunteer staff members socialize, train, and clean the kennel. Second Chance Dobes is currently not accepting new staff volunteers, but you can still help by joining our discussion forum and visiting the SCD Fundraising topics. We are always looking for suggestions on new fundraising ideas and donations of items for our fundraising auctions.
Each of our dogs has a unique background and history. They are spayed/neutered, and current on all shots and medications prior to leaving for their new homes. We have a rainbow of colors available, as well as dogs of various activity, temperament and obedience levels. Our dogs are not all home raised, well-trained animals, but they are worthy of a chance at a decent life in a loving, PERMANENT home.
If you would like to give an unwanted Doberman a second chance at life, please fill out our Online Adoption Application . Once your application has been reviewed, you will receive an e-mail detailing your approval status as well as directions on how to find the kennel. Saturdays are reserved for approved adopters to visit the kennel and adopt their new family member(s).

All our Dobermans are up to date on vaccinations and spayed or neutered. A $275 (cash or money order ONLY) adoption fee is required for adult dogs, $400 for puppies under a year of age. A legal and binding contract must be signed. Dogs may be seen ONLY AFTER the adoption application is completed and an appointment is confirmed!
Can't adopt but would still like to help?
Every day thousands of adoptible pets are killed at local animal controls because of the simple fact that they're homeless. It is Second Chance Dobes' mission to rescue and rehabilitate the Dobermans that others have failed, the unwanted, the unloved and the abandoned. We provide complete medical care, including spay/neuter, heart worm testing, vaccinations and parasite removal for every dog that comes into the rescue. We do our best to evaluate the temperament of each dog in order to make the best possible placement for that dog. We provide life long support for our adopters following adoption. We try to educate the public about the Doberman Breed and the importance of spay/neutering.
Rescuing is very expensive--every dog in our program will cost an average of $100.00 - $400.00, depending on his or her medical needs and length of stay. You can help alleviate the burdens of those expenses by choosing to Sponsor a Homeless Pet. Every donation made to the rescue to aid one of its residents helps, and no amount is too small. If you are unable to adopt but would like to help, this is a great way to make a difference in the life of a homeless Dobe. When you choose to become a sponsor, you save a life. After your sponsor dog has been adopted, you can read about their progress in the New Beginnings page on our discussion forum.
Whether you are able to adopt or sponsor, your generosity will save the life of an animal in need. We do not turn away any Dobe in need, except in extreme cases of overcrowding.
