I'm asking this here because if I google it I might never sleep... I gave Stella her Sentinel last night and both her poops this morning had live long skinny white worms in them. The most recent one they were still moving. Do I need to 'worm' her or will the Sentinel kill everything? I don't have to worry about me or Jack do I?

Hey - where's Cheri and Sharon!  I think the sentinel covers it.  It should.

It sounds like roundworms just from your description, but I want to stress I am not a health professional, canine, human, or otherwise.

Is this her first dose of the Sentinel since you got her?  Is it regular Sentinel or Sentinel Spectrum?  Both say they treat roundworms, but only the Spectrum treats tapeworms.  Not saying that's what it is, just pointing out the difference between the two different Sentinels.

If this is her first dose, then my best guess is you're seeing a worm die-off that tells you the meds are working.  If she has gotten previous doses, then I would be wondering why she still has worms.  Either way, just for my own peace of mind, I would want to give my vet a call on Monday, explain what you saw, and get their advice.  They may want to do a fecal float after the Sentinel has had a chance to do what it's supposed to do.

Likewise, I would ask your vet about Jack's possible exposure.  My vet has always told me, if they find worms or worm eggs in one dog's sample, they generally like to deworm all the dogs in the family at the same time.  Also, everything I've read and heard says humans should be careful not to touch contaminated poop.  It should be picked up immediately, sealed in plastic bags, and properly disposed of.

Maybe someone who knows more than I do will chime in......

It's her first dose of Sentinel - I only give mine their HW meds from Jun-Nov. So it is likely killing off the worms she has. I will call on Monday to be sure - but they are definitely roundworms and not tapeworms. I'm just worried about our exposure - since she has likely been shedding eggs the whole time - but I don't think it's terribly common as long as you aren't in contact with fecal matter. We do pick up our yard regularly.

You nailed everything I've been told from our vet.

Those kids were wormed more than once while I had them here.  They were both loaded with everything including coccidia.  They had no idea that poop wasn't food or a facial mask.

Just to update - we are good with the Sentinel (and Jack's Revolution). She only passed worms twice - all her other poops have been clear so just a few stragglers. I'm sure the neighbours are horrified watching me inspect dog poop. :P

I rewormed her sister just in case.  It's a wonder that I don't have them too.  No JackAE, I'm not worming me.

This mornings worm hunt found Zeus with round worms too and I nailed him with wormer.  It's no wonder I don't see the spider webs in the corner of the windows, I'm too busy hunting worms on the ground and floor.

She was still passing live worms as of Thursday so we are doing a 5 day fenbendazole to clear her out. The sentinel will only kill adult worms so she would still be shedding eggs and could have others in various life stages. :)

And who ever sees spider webs. I'm just trying to keep up with the fluff on the floor from destroyed stuffies.

Back to "worms"..... went to the vet and heartworm preventer "Interceptor" is back on the market.... years ago had several of my dobes on it, then mfg NOVARTIS took it off the market.  It appears to cover more "adult" parasites/worms than Heartgard.

Oh good! We've been worm free for a while but I had to switch Jack from Revolution to something else that was better for intestinal worms.
