Nail trimming can be difficult, esp if they've had bad experiences. Here's how I worked w/my dogs who wouldn't even let me touch their feet. Every day I gently touched them all over, looking at their teeth & running my hands down their legs & feet but not lingering on their paws. When they were laying down I did the same, gradually focusing more on touching their paws. Most are ticklish it seems. Once they learn to trust you it becomes easier. Eventually I would nip just a tiny bit of the tip using 1 of the larger human toenail clippers before moving on to the dog trimmers. Lots of praise & treats help. My vet recommended Millers Forge nail trimmers. I got a smaller pair w/red handles. It is not a guillotine type, & has a safety bar on the back so you will never trim off more than about 1/4 inch at a time. I always hold the nail at the base by the paw so it doesn't flex or bend when cut. That way they only feel my fingers on their paw, which they've gotten used to, not the actual trimming itself. This can take awhile so be patient. I have had a couple dogs who never got around to let me clip them they thrashed so hard, but this method has worked with the last few Dobes I adopted from Arda. You never want to cut the quick, so that safety bar is a must for me. Once they get used to being touched all over they should allow you to touch their feet. Now we are working on daily toothbrushing & it's going well, although Daisy would rather try to chew the brush than keep her jaws closed. I think the toothpaste tastes too good to her! Mr Beau (Weevil) is much more of a gentleman. Good luck!

We use a rasp for horses hoofs you can get them at tractor supply it only takes a few minutes to do and for some reason they dont seem to mind the rasp. My dobe I had before had to always go to the vet to have her nail trim done until we tried the rasp. And she was a I will do anything you ask type of dog.

Well we got 1 back foot done with the Dremel,,,yeah!!!! :Drooling: Classes are going great, she is learning to walk great on a leash we go for walks almost every night she knows 730 on the clock I think she tells time..lol. We got the wireless fence in and she got shocked for the first time yesterday (total 4 shocks different spots in lawn)I almost cried as I hated walking her on a lease for her to get shocked but today she only got it 1 time so good improvment, heard the beep warning and sat on this side of flags...earned lots of treats. We found out she loves Apples good cleaning for the teeth. We had friends over Memorial day they brought their lab, first hour was a bit testy but they were chasing balls by the end of the day. She goes to the tanner with us now but think she has sumtimers..lol people come in she barks and visits they tan for 15 minutes and then they come out she barks like she's never seen them before, but we will get there...WE LOVE HER SO MUCH AND SO HAPPY SHE CHOOSE US TO LIVE WITH!!!! I hope her previous parents could see how happy she is, they would be glad to know we love her with all out hearts and are taking very good care of her.

Reading this put a big smile on my face. What a smart girl, I'm sure she will have the fence boundaries figured out in no time. I'm glad she decided to make friends with the lab. Our kids can also tell time, for dinner that is lol! About 20mins before dinner time they start getting excited and pacing back and forth to the kitchen.

This is such a great update. Thank you for letting us know how she's doing and for giving her the structure and patience she needs to be the best Dobergirl she can be. :D

Congratulations on the nail trimming & on the fence training! Once you have a schedule set with a Dobe, they learn to tell time. Ours wake us at 5am every day for breakfast, even if it is a day we could sleep in. :pinch: They also know what time their supper is....they start pacing back & forth into the back room, where they are fed. Kolu is a bit of a picky eater as we have found. we got her a bag of blue buffalo when she first came to us and dove right in, after a week she would eat hit or miss so we picked up a small bag of the samlon same food line again dove in. here we are again 2 weeks later and its hit or miss eating. i wouldn't be to worried about it but she is so skinny to start with. its time for food that just looks to good to walk away from so we are going to try raw food and she how she does. anybody feed raw or use some raw with dry food? we will try it and see.

When we brought Darcy home, she was the same way....a skinny, picky eater. We found that if we put a tablespoon of cottage cheese, or plain unflavored yogurt, on top of her food, it would entice her to eat. Now she has a good appetite. I know some people do really well feeding raw, but you have to do quite a bit of research on it, to ensure that Kolu is getting the proper amount of all the essential nutrients.
Happiness is a decision.

There are groups online that you can join regarding raw feeding. I did it for a little while when all the contaminated dog food was out, but I did not join a group. Good job with the fence/boundary training. If she gets a few shocks, just remember that a couple zaps are no big deal compared to a whack from a car. Thanks for the update:)

My Schaudeh (not a Dobe, White Shepherd mix) is a very
picky eater always has been she is not thin though. I do
the yogurt thing and cottage cheese too. There are many
people who swear by raw feeding, I have never tried it, but
like Karen mentioned there are groups regarding the raw
food feeding. Good luck it can sure make ya crazy, been
there and still am..............LOL

I have raw food and orijen dry. Libby won't touch the raw food. She loves the orijen - my husbands gordon setter eats the raw and dry. Honest kitchen has food you add water to that is good. Good luck

The grain free foods are excellent for Dobes. Blue has a good line as does Earthborn Holistic. I use a little hot water to soften the kibble & add flavor. I give them a small bit of canned salmon or mackerel on top, but make sure to rinse the salt off. I put a couple spoons of plain yogurt & a squirt or 2 of Grizzly salmon oil. Great for their coats, tummies & picky eaters love the taste. You want to try to avoid switching their food all the time. Most dogs love fruit & veggies, just no grapes, raisins or chocolate! Not sure about onions. Also whole grain bread. Most anything healthy people eat they can have a bit of. Whole, natural foods, not processed tho. & of course some Milkbones & Trader Joe's scrumptious peanut butter treats!

She is loving freedom in the yard and we have had some great ball playing and running she HATES the sprinklers not sure if a Dobe thing or a fussy Kolu thing!! Hopefully she likes water going to try to introduce that slow with the lakes but not pushing her to much...She has learned to shake on command so now drumelling the nails goes really well yeah!!!!!

What a good update. My girls hate the sprinkler too. I can get them to go through if I run through with them but they don't enjoy it. ^_^ But we take them to the lake and they go right in. They don't swim out much, but they love to stand chest high and bite at the waves.

Kolu the big baby! over the last few months the things we have learned about are pretty funny. as we said she hates the sprinklers, not a fan of thunder, and it looks as if she gets cold very easy, like a day in the A/C at 74 and her ears are cold and she will shake(cant wait for winter) things she does like: sleep, taking up as much bed as she can, laying on the deck in the sun(but only if someone will sit outside with her or its in and out until you do) stuffing free toys if she is awake you can find one hanging from her mouth. she has personality thats for sure. she listens pretty well. likes to chase a ball and walks. she is very sweet to people and kids and does ok with some dogs. she is getting better with the cat but the cat hates her so they wont be cuddle buddies in the near future. all in all she looks pretty happy just a little lazy. loves raw food and yogert she put a few pounds on now and looks great.
im glad we got to give her a new home she is a great little girl.

Thank you for the update on Kolu. It is fun to see a rescue dog's personality emerge after they are comfortable in their new home. It sounds like Kolu is really enjoying life. Thank you for giving her such a wonderful home. :Rose:

Ya I don't know even the most dominant dogs, like our girl Alley, still have their phobias. Big bad Alley thinks the ruler of darkness, the destroyer of worlds for some reason lives inside our toaster! The popping sound, the sound of the lever going down.....accidentally bumping into it and making the metal bread holder thingies give the faintest of audible tones......all of them send her trying to rotate the Earth under her feet as she tries to escape it. :Silly:
