What is the advantage of letting a puppy only have so much time to eat. BB gets 2 cups of food 3 times a day. She will eat a few bites then run into the living room and play for awhile. then goes back and eats a few more bites then goes and plays. etc, etc, till it is all done. sometimes it takes 10 minutes sometimes it takes 1 hour. she always has water down to drink.

Well, a lot of little things. You should have some control over spoiled kids. What if you are on vacation with her and she needs to eat so you can move on. Then the issues of medications. I always put meds in their food. I want them to eat it so they can go on with the day. You have to be the boss. She is going to be a great big Dobermann soon. Get control of her when she is a little bitty Dobermann. She has so many wonderful things to kill and play with, that she is not concentrating on the food bowl. Put her bowl down 4 times a day for awhile.

Well, she doesn't have competition, so I'd give her 1/2 hour to start. Then back it off to 20 min. Till you have a reasonable time. I made the mistake with Diamond. I knew better but I did it anyway. Just too busy to see what I was doing. She eats one kibble at a time and it can take all day. If anyone else is let out they gobble it all up right in front of her. Then I get the poor baby look from her.

Holy cow! I must be starving mine! They each get 3 cups a day....that's' it! I don't have to worry about leaving it down because it's gone before I can blink.
I think my dog's weight looks good, except for Ruby who is the official floor cleaner around here. She picks up after those babies very nicely :sorcerer: . I guess I just can't imagine 6 cups of food a day for a puppy. That seems like so much.

They are growing puppies. I have three here and they are being fed 9 cups 3 X daily. They are growing by inches and pounds. 2 over 20 lbs and Chaois at about 17 or 18 pounds.

Ella,

Would she do better if she was crated at meal time, without the distraction of the toy factory? Then her only focus would be the food. Just a thought!

Im wondering if were not feeding Kiera enough....

We just switched her off of Eukanuba to Blue Buffalo and upped her to 4 cups 2 times a day (2 cups per feeding) as per bag recommendations. Were already starting to see her filling out a little more than before but I cant imagine what would happen if we fed her that much.

Probably poop city. :sorcerer:

Do you mean they are each getting 9 cups of food three times a day, or is that a total for all three puppies?

I think she means each pup gets 3 cups, 3X a day, so each pup gets 9cups total per day. I think.... :sorcerer: Bay gets 2cups 2X a day, 4cups total. Al and Bud each get 1.5cups twice a day, 3cups total. Bay is still growing, I hope. We switched to "Chicken Soup for the dog lovers soul" because Bay was having some problems on the Pro Plan. Since it is higher in protein, they get a little less of it than they did the Pro Plan.

It matters to the one you save.

When I just had one dog -- a poodle -- she had food down all the time, and she ate when she wanted to. She never overate, and it really wasn't a problem. My mother had an overweight dachund that we gave less than a cup of food two times a day in one of those puzzle balls so it would take her a long time to eat, because when she would gobble it all up in two minutes she would be so sad. With more than one dog, though, they have to eat their food in a limited amount of time, or else one dog will clean up after all the others.

How much a dog gets would depend on its activity and metabolism and has to be individualized. Just like some people have faster or slower metabolism, so do dogs. My two adult, 85 pound dogs are not terribly active and maintain that weight on 4 cups of adult dry dog food a day -- they also get more table leavings every day than they probably should, too. :sorcerer:

Some of you have met my Pheberjean. She was starved to bones when we got her. Finally got rid of her worms and she looks like a snausage. She gets 2 cups of dry and 1/3 can of wet food a day plus a thyroid pill 2 X daily. These pups need all they are getting right now. We will slow down in a week or so but they were neutered and their ears were cropped. They were full of worms. So we treat the problems and give their little body all the nutrition they need to grow. Don't forget, they will be dropping puppy teeth shortly and getting the big kid teeth and that really zaps them too. At one point the were down in the pasterns when they came home from the vets. So we poured it to them and up they came. Babies and puppies have to be watched very carefully for all kinds of things. Bubbles - it was rickets.

If I remember the story right, Bubbles came into rescue at 6 months old, or so, and the damage had already been done.

How did you know how to spell "Plie' "? Did your mommy and daddy make you go to ballet classes too?
He was about 10 weeks old and was walking on his pasterns instead of his feet. It was a sight. But we did get him on his feet. He's as good as we could get him. And I might add, he's as dumb as a pile of rocks but everyone loves the big fool and he is as gentle as he is big. An obedience animal he will never be. That's my boy!
