A friend sent me this link to a site where we can send Internet petitions to Congress. Scroll down until you see the one regarding Dobermans in military housing.

http://www.petition2congress.com/2/

Now, I am not sure how this petition site works and whether it has any impact. But I did do some checking and a simple Google search for "U.S. Army dog breed policy" brings up multiple sites that tell me this is absolutely true. Here is just one link.

http://www.riley.arm...90520150539.pdf

This is a real eye-opener. I did not realize it had come to this. This is our own federal government instituting a breed ban for reasons based on anything but facts. Please, send this petition to everyone you know who loves dogs and does not believe in breed bans. As I said, I don't know how much good this petition will do, and I think we all need to write to our elected federal officials, as well. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Senator Carl Levin from Michigan the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee? Let's bombard him with letters!

P.s. the base Kori is stationed at Scott AFB has a similar thing. Its priviatized houseing and the company running it will not allow certain breeds and dogs over a 100lbs from what I heard.

I just signed the petion and it automatically asks if you would like to send a letter to your congress people. You just edit the letter and email it off. The site fills in your representatives based on your address. I got an email saying 33 people in Michigan had signed the petition so far. Let's see if with SCD members help we can really increase that. I also added a section to my letter regarding increased homeowner insurance rates for specific breed being based on fiction not fact, and ban breeds.

I think I need to clarify something. My first post may have been misunderstood. This breed ban for U.S. Army housing is across the board, the entire U.S. Army. It is not just Fort Riley. I'm sorry if it sounded that way. I only posted the Fort Riley link because it had the PDF memo that summarized the policy. I do not believe the colonel from Fort Riley is the one responsible for coming up with the army's policy.

Unbelievable they would even consider this.

I was the 53rd person from Michigan to sign this petition. In my letter, I talked about how Dobermans lost their lives helping to liberate Guam in 1944. I also attached a link to a video presentation given by Mr. Forsythe. At the age of 20, Mr. Forsythe was a Marine War Dog Handler in the South Pacific in World War II handling a Doberman there.
I will be passing this petition on to three of my friends, who also own Dobermans.

I pointed out they are taking rights away from the men and women who are dying to protect ours. That is such hypocrisy. The land of the free, hmmm? My bro in law is in the Navy, and my sister's GSP scared a man away from her kitchen window in the middle of the night when she lived on base and my brother in law was at sea. She saw the guy climbing out over the fence, and there were footprints leading to the window. Without Reno, who knows what might have happened to my sister or my niece and nephew? People know when all the guys are gone from base housing. The women and children living there deserve peace of mind. They have enough to worry about.

It matters to the one you save.

SIGNED SEALED AND DELIVERED, I also wrote my father fought in both World War11 and the Korean War as a Marine
special forces and thought they were one of best and trusted breeds there are.

I went back and checked the status on the petition. 4499 letters have been sent so far with 2295 different signers. 91 people from Michigan have now signed. That is triple the number from when I signed!! We do love our dobes.

Just signed this AM, only 19 people from Ohio have signed so far. I pointed out that I don't think ANY breed should be banned, being the keeper of a American bulldog/pitt bull mix. Arda has met her and can attest to her "visciousness." More children are bitten every year by golden retrievers than by either pitts or dobermans, but the idiocy continues.

I received this email today from Sen.Levin.

Dear Ms. Runyan:

Thank you for contacting me about regulating pet ownership for privatized housing under the Army’s Residential Communities Initiative (RCI) program. I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this matter.

In December 2008, the Department of the Army issued a memorandum outlining a new pet policy in which tenants of RCI privatized housing on Army installations may not house any dog of a breed that is deemed “aggressive or potentially aggressive,” unless the dog is a certified military working dog. Under RCI policy, this includes Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Chows, and wolf hybrids. According to the Department of the Army, this policy was enacted to increase the safety and welfare of all residents and was developed with input from residents of the RCI.

In light of the concerns you have raised, I encourage you to contact the Department of the Army directly at the following address:

Department of the Army
110 Army Pentagon
Washington, DC 20310.

Should this issue come before the full Senate, I will keep your views in mind. Thank you again for writing.

Sincerely,
Carl Levin

In case you would like to contact the army as well.

It matters to the one you save.

I recieved the same e-mail yesterday from Carl Levin.
Dave Camp sent me an actual letter saying he appriciated my comments and would look into it. (yeah, right)
At least we are putting in in their head so they know it's an issue people care about.

I'm surprised Carl Levin has someone sending pre-written responses now. He used to personally respond when I would e-mail him. Even though i'd vote him out if given the chance, he has always been gracious to me on other issues.

He's basically washing his hands of it however. This is not a law that was passed, and has nothing to do with coming before the full senate. It was an executive order. He knows it never will come before the senate, yet he mentions it as if there is a chance.

Being chairman of the Armed Services Comittee, a phone call by him to the Department of the Army would hold a lot of weight. I guess we're casting pearls before swine once again.
