I am hoping to get Felix into an obedience class this summer. He is doing better, but I feel that I am at the point where I need some hands on instruction. He still pulls really bad on walks which is the main reason I want to find a trainer. I have tried a lot on my own, but he is just so excited that he doesn't listen to me when we are outside. Inside he listens most of the time, but when we do training with treats he gets so excited that he tries everything he knows without me asking to try and figure out what I want. He has so much energy and I am not sure how to deal with it. Can anyone recommend a good trainer in the Ann Arbor area? I do use corrections (usually verbal is enough), but only when I know for certain that he knows what I want from him but he is refusing to do it.

You can contact Country Kennels, Mark and his staff are excellent.
They have different trainers there, Marci, Mark,Neva a number
of them, it is worth a try and not far from you. Mark is
very well known thru out the area.

There is another in Blissfield, Chad M. Bocskay 517) 605 6912,
he also does Protection Training.

Forgot to mention on here both do individual and group training.
Chad owns Dobes

I am not sure, this would be the first dog I am doing training with. I think he would do better with individual instruction, but I am not sure I could afford that. He sometimes has problems with other males, but it is just the fact that he wants to be dominant over them. He won't just attack out of no where, it is more like if they take something that belongs to him.

Country Kennel does individual and group sessions
Group is 7 weeks 1 hr session for $105.00

Individual is 1/2 hr session for $140.00 is 6 weeks

These are done by Marci and Margo and I can vouch for both of them

If behavioral is an issue then it goes for consultation with Neva.

I know these trainers and I have faith in them so I hope this
helps, but you have to do your homework.

Thank you to everyone who gave suggestions. I will look into these and decide which one is best for us. Does anyone have an idea about how I can control his excitement while we are training until we get into a class?

We started with a head collar, but he was still pulling so much that I was worried about his neck. I am now trying a prong and it seems to have helped, but I don't know if it is fitted right. I did a lot of research before trying the prong and I tried it on myself first.

The prong collar needs to be correctly sized and fitted properly in order for it to be effective. Here is an illustration.

LOL on the trying on of the prong collar! I think many of us who have used them have done the same thing. Unfortunately, they LOOK like a medieval torture device, but as I'm sure you found out, they don't feel as bad as they look, and used properly, they can be an effective training tool. Here's what I have learned from my many training classes and different instructors. A prong collar should sit high on the dog's neck, right behind the ears, and it should be snug enough that it doesn't slip down or rotate easily on the dog's neck. With Dobermans, it has to be pretty snug because they don't have thick fur to help keep it in place. Ideally, you want the portion with the smooth chain part, where the leash attaches, to be in the front of the neck as that is the most sensitive part, so with most dogs, you want to keep the prongs away from that area if you can. If the prongs start to rotate around to the front of the neck despite your best efforts, you can always turn a couple of the links inside-out so that the prongs are facing out instead of in. By the way, I had the same experience with the head halter. Both of my dogs seem to be immune to them. Like Felix, they just pulled anyway, and I was afraid of damaging the vertebrae in their necks.

Yes they do have to fit properly and not to hurt the dog as well as being
effective

We were taught in obedience class the prong collar, when used correctly, mimics the correction the mother dog gives it's pups.

EXACTLY! They have to understand what you are doing. They understand the mother dog grabbing them by the neck.

I love that Leerburg site, that is actually where I got the idea to try the prong. After reading through the question and answer section again I realized that I should take another link out and now it is fitting right. Our walks are improving now, he still gets excited but he doesn't pull.

Glad to hear it. They do get their attention just like the Mom does. :doberman:

I forgot to mention here, my cousin is a K-9 State Police, their dogs
are trained with a red ball when they have done a good job.
They are a very nice dog unless they know they are going to
work, when Tim puts his harness on well he knows he is either
going for a narcotics run or a track. It is so interesting to
watch, it is amazing. State of Michigan does not want them to
bite, they can pin and hold but NO BITE

I trained Hunter with a glove, Schaudeh and others a special toy.
Just an FYI

Prong collars work well, if fitted properly. I have the Secret Powers prong collar that a friend made, the prongs are fitted inside a nice looking nylon collar, you can check them out at Lolalimited.net look for the secret power, then click on it and check them out. You can remove or add prongs if/when needed or remove all prongs and have a nice nylon , limited slip collar.

I checked out her website. Maybe I'm dense, but I don't really understand how it works. A prong collar is supposed to be used on the back of a dog's neck to simulate the mother dog's correction. It appears that the secret powers collar is used on the throat of the dog. I don't see how that would give a proper correction.
Happiness is a decision.
