We adopted a middle age Doberman 3 months ago from the Humane Society, and now he is growling at our 14 year old blind and deaf pug when she walks by. She doesn't know that she is being growled at, so it doesn't bother her but we have children and want to be careful. We were also thinking about getting a puppy when the pug passes, but now are worried that our dobe may be too aggressive. At first, we thought he was guarding his bed, but have noticed that he will growl even when not on his bed. I ready your article, and will take away his bed and toys to see if that helps. We have been telling him "no" and he will look away so it seems like he is being submissive. He has also growled at our 3 year old son, which he got a verbal reprimands for, if Jakob startles him. Please help! He is finally getting settled in and we really want it to work out but are very concerned.

The very best advice I can give you is to find a trainer or an obedience class in your area. Until then, I would have this boy tethered to me by a leash so that he has no freedom until he earns it. Have you heard of Nothing in life is Free? Look it up on google. Basically, he has to earn the right to have anything. To go outside, to eat dinner, to get petted- EVERYTHING. Do you let him on furniture? If so get him off it. No furniture, that is a privilege. Does he have a crate? I personally, crate train all my dogs and the crate is a place he can feel safe. Since you have a three year old, you need to make sure this boy understands his place in the household. He needs to learn your son is above him so to speak. PLEASE find a trainer as soon as possible.

It matters to the one you save.

Get a crate and start using it. ASAP! The child will be next on his list. Do not let him in or on your bed or the child's bed. Do it NOW!

Growled at your "3 year old" ???????
WOW get this under contror NOW, the more comfortable he
gets and knows that is his home....it is only going to
get worse if this is not taken care of.

If need be.....not only obedience training but a trainer in
behavior issues. DO NOT WAIT THIS VERY MINUTE IS NOT
"SOON ENOUGH".

Darla, if you are willing to share the general part of the state you live in, there may be some members of the forum who can refer you to a good trainer/behaviorist in your area. This is not a situation where a group class at Petco or something like that is going to help. You need one-on-one interaction with a professional who has experience working with challenging dogs and can help you learn the proper ways to deal with your dog's behavior. He needs a clear understanding of pack structure, what the rules are, but there are right and wrong ways to do that. Frankly, some methods may just make things worse.

It's impossible to tell you exactly what needs to be done, in detail, from a one-time post on a discussion board. I am not an expert and I cannot say if this is aggression or resource-guarding or something else. However, I know everyone here wants to see this turn out well for your family, both human and canine. That's why we are all suggesting you get professional help.

In the meantime, very careful management is required to make sure everyone in your home is safe. I'm stating the obvious here, and I'm sure you know this, but because this is a public board that can be read by anyone, I'll say again that a dog and a baby or young child should never be left alone together, period. That's just common sense in every situation.

Hi Darla,

We have an article that we sometimes give our new adopters and others in situations like this, it is called Alpha Boot Camp and it tells you how to become the alpha leader in your home and control issues like you are having. Please read it and follow its advice and let us know if you have any questions.

Darla, I want to say here dogs are different just like
people, what works for one may not work for another.
I am PRAYING for ALL of you. If he goes back to the shelter
the outcome will not be good, if the issues are not resolved
that is not good either.

Please keep us updated

Joaquin's recommended attached article is GREAT and to the point. We let so many dogs fail due to
our unawareness of dog body language and how they interpret our body language.
Thumbs up to incorporating the basics in the article as well as an obedience class - wish it was a requirement
for "all" whom own any breed of dog.

For anyone whom is interested I found Brenda Aloff's book "Aggression in Dogs - Practical Management, Prevention & Behavior Modification" to be of great interest/educational - although she has alot of knowledge in this area - I found it more enlightening as far as reading dog body language, various types of aggression (case history examples) and just communicating "better" with your dog. My current dobes have "aggression" situations with each other and one is very high energy/prey drive driven and this book has given me more insight as to how to manage it better.

I have heard many good things about Brenda Aloff and her methods. I have a couple of her books, though not the one mentioned above. She is in the Midland area. Several of my training instructors and fellow training club members have taken lessons from her.

Darla, I sure hope you'll post again with an update.
