Ok smart dobie people, I need your help because I am at my wits end with KC! We went to my daughters volleyball banquet tonight, only gone an hour and a half, and he peed all over the crate. He was soaked so I had to give him a bath. He still has meltdowns when he gets crated and we leave. I have tried the following: added divider to make crate smaller, no water before we leave, reward for laying quiet in crate, chew toys only given when in crate, food and water only when in crate, sleeps in crate (quiet until about 3 am then starts fussing), crate sporadically throughout the day even when we are home.

What else can I do to get him to stop doing this? I'm sick of cleaning stinky pee!

HELLLLLLLPPPP PLEEZE! :(

Try a belly band. It's sorta like a straight diaper that wraps around the midsection and covers the pee pee. Joined together with velcro. If it worked for Ardas Dennis then it will work on anyone. It's worth a shot.

Took us 3 years to house break Dennis.  And we finally put a belly band on him and it was done.

Where did you get KC?  Just curious.  Cus Bedlam and KC are about the same age and she is not housebroken either.  She is presently in training and I will worry about housebreaking when she comes home.

He's from Gladwin.  I cannot remember the breeder's name at the moment, but I can check his papers when I get home.  His DOB is 3/6.

I would think he would chew the belly band off knowing him!

Dennis didn't.  Toby chewed up one but it didn't fit very snug.

Does he only pee when inside the crate, or does he still have potty accidents elsewhere in the house?  I guess I'm trying to understand if you're dealing with a simple housetraining issue, or if this is a manifestation of separation anxiety, or if he just hates the crate (or some combination of those).  Where in the house is his crate situated?  What do you do when he starts fussing at 3 a.m.?  Do you have other dogs or cats in the home?

Sorry for all the questions.  I'm just trying to get the full picture.

The belly band sounds like a good idea to try.  Introduce it to him gradually, let him wear it around the house for short periods, distract him if he shows a desire to chew on it, reward him for leaving it alone.  Have two or three of them, so you'll have a fresh one if he does wet it.

He only goes in the crate when we are gone. I believe it is a mix of he hates the crate and separation anxiety. We did let him sleep in our room at night for a while and he never once wanted to go outside during the night. I started making him sleep in the crate at night again to reinforce the "den" mentality hoping he would stop peeing in there. Initially when he whined I would take him outside, but now I correct him and tell him firmly to be quiet! His crate is in the laundry room which is right next to my bedroom. I did order the belly band. Can't wait to try it!

You can also make a belly band if you can sew. I used a pair of jeans cut the legs off, measured it around the dog so you can make it a little snug and sewed velcro into the inside top so it secures on the dogs back. You can take a soft towel and sew in a piece in the area where his pee pee is.

Jack has to wear a belly band when we go to other people's housed because he's a jerk and lifts his leg on everything. It doesn't bother him at all.

I went to my dog club meeting last night and we had a guest speaker on a topic that might be of interest in this thread.  She was a rep from a veterinary pharmaceutical company and was there to talk about a calming pheromone product called Adaptil.  Some people may have heard them called dog-appeasing pheromones.  Basically, it mimics the natural pheromones given off by a mother dog when she has puppies which are believed to help the puppies feel calm, safe, and comfortable.

I don't know if this will show up as a link or not, but the website of the company is Adaptil.com.  I've only given it a quick look so far, but it seems that there is a lot of helpful information on that site.  The product can be used as a spray that you would put on a bandana or the dog's bed, etc., or an infused collar, or a room diffuser.

I've not tried it, but apparently there are plenty of studies that show it is helpful, and many shelters are starting to use it to help the dogs relax.  The rep explained that it is intended to calm a dog that is in a fearful or stressed state, and will not cure behavioral/training issues, boredom, or a dog that is not getting enough exercise, etc.

It sounds intriguing, and I did get a free sample last night and plan to try it on Tasha when she rides in the car.  I guess it may not work, since she is not the least bit afraid of the car, but she just gets so darned excited that she screams at the top of her lungs almost continuously.  I asked the rep, and she said it may or may not work in that kind of a situation, but it's worth a try.

I guess you can buy this product at some vets' offices, some pet stores, and online at places like Amazon.

I have some of this and can send it to you to try. It didn't work for Stella at all - we were hoping it might help with her anxiety around Dan, loud noises, etc.

Rescue remedy does work for us and we use Melatonin for fireworks.

BTW Jack is a pug and he really doesn't care about anything... I don't know if you've seen the Honeybadger youtube video ... but thats him. He does what he wants when he wants to do it. *sigh*

I'm glad Stef mentioned Rescue Remedy.  I was thinking about that one, but after listening to the Adaptil rep last night, that's what was on my mind and I completely forgot about the RR.  It's good to hear that Stef has tried it and it worked in her situation.  I've heard other people say they've had good results from that one.  Interesting about the melatonin, too.  I know people who have used that to help with insomnia (for themselves), but I don't know too much else about it.

I use Melatonin to put coats back on Fawns and Blues.  Used it for years.

http://www.vetblog.n...-dose-rate.html

It states here that it can be used for separation anxiety. I haven't used it that way but I know that long term use in humans can alter how the body processes our own hormones - I'll look for some studies today in dogs.

My mom uses rescue remedy and melatonin together for her beagle for storms and fireworks. I use rescue remedy with Stella for storms and fireworks. I used to give Tux melatonin for bad storms or really heavy fireworks (Canada Day, etc.) It makes them sleepy and calm.

I thought you would all enjoy this update.....I bought the belly band, had him wear it around the house for about 15 minutes a few times the next day, just to get him used to it..........he's NEVER peed in the crate since!!!! Not even once!!  He is such a little .   So I guess it was the best $20 spent!  It sits in the closet unused, which is fine with me.  ha

I think he knew what it was and he was embarrassed, so he decided to start behaving.

LOL...that's life with a dobe I suppose!

I'm telling you.........3 yers we worked with Dennis.  I was ready to give up.  This is a 100 pound male that we could not housebreak.  And a simple pee pad did the trick in a weeks time.  I would never believe it if I hadn't used one.  Hurrah for Pee Pads.
