Max woke us up at 2 am Saturday morning having a grand mal seizure. I think it scared my husband more that me. (Me being the nurse I knew what it was) The only thing that bothers me is what is the cause of his seizure? He has not had any neuro changes. He has been acting fine. No wobbling, no falling, nothing. He eats Taste of the Wild food, all of the few treats he gets are made in the USA or right here in Michigan. He has not has another one...so it is off to the vet today for him.

To the vet! Dobie Sunshine's white Dobe has seizures also. We have her on phenobarbital 2 X's a day. She is enjoying her life to the fullest. But my old Pyrenees was having very bad ones and she had a tumor causing hers. We could not help her.
Max will be all right.

My very first Doberman (whose name was also Max!) was between a year and a half and two years old when he started having seizures. No reason was ever found. With some dogs, I feel it may be an inherited tendency. My dog's seizures were well-controlled with phenobarbitol, which I believe we ended up giving him three times a day. It took a while to work out the best dosage. But he lived to be eight and died of DCM, nothing to do with epilepsy. I wish your Max the very best. Please let us know what your vet says.

Schaudeh has or had seizures. They scared the living daylights
out of me. Hers started when she was around 3yrs old, all tests
run, no brain tumor or abnormal blood work. Sometimes
according to my vet they just don't know why, hers they
believe is epilepsy and she was put on the lowest dose of
pheno twice daily. She is now 12, 13 yrs in April. She
has not even had slight ones and believe me when
I say "SHE IS LIVING HER LIFE TO THE FULLEST."

Prayers sent to you, praying that things turn out OK :( :icon12:

Sorry I am getting back to everyone so late. Our power went out for 6 hours Sunday for no apparent reason and when it came back on our internet didn't work. When we did get it working it was slower than molasses!! We are finally back up and running today. I took Max to the vet and he has been seizure free since his one and only on Saturday night. The vet drew blood for a full panel including thyroid studies. She said if anything is off, she will send it off to MSU for further studies. I am going to call tomorrow to see how everything turned out. She is going to watch him for now and if he continues to have seizures frequently or if they are prolonged she will place him on phenobarb. He is a big boy and she is also concerned about his size with the seizures. She doesn't want him or anyone else to get hurt. We will see how things go from here and I will keep everyone inform.

Thank you for the update on Max. I was worried when we didn't hear anything more, I'm glad it was just due to a power failure. Hopefully Max stays seizure free. :icon12:

When Nellie had her Grand Mal Seizures they were approx. 6 months apart. The first one lasted about 30 minutes from beginning to the end when she was coherant & able to walk around on her own. She was able to come out of her seizure on her own with her 1st seizure. The second seizure was much worse it lasted more than an hour and I couldn't get her to come out of it. I finally had a friend get me a valume (spelling??) from my vet and I had to give it to her rectally (spelling??). I now keep her crated all the time that I am not home so if she does have a seizure she is in a safe confined area. I also keep valume on hand in case she does have another seizure and cannot come out of on her own.
Nellie has not had any seizures since she has been on her medication and I have her blood / med levels checked yearly.
Good luck and hope all goes well for Max...

Praying everything goes well for you. :icon12:

I have the levels check on Schaudeh every year as
well, she has not had a seizure in almost 10 years.

The second seizure was horrific, she went off the
bed and was stuck between the bed and the wall,
she is not a small dog. She is my snow white
baby.

She is having a very good ife, never even know
she has had seizures. Thank God. :(

Let's all hope that Max will remain seizure free :icon12: . I think it's a good idea to keep him confined to a safe place when you are not home like Jackie suggested...I hate to see him tumble down steps or bang into something sharp.

Good thinking Karen. They can get hurt from the thrashing around. My Favorite Pyr had seizures.

Max remains seizure free and is always crated when we leave him alone. He would get into way too much trouble left out. :icon12:
