We had noticed small patches (think pea sized) of hair falling out and attributed it to her crawling under the fence to be with me when I wasnt working in the fenced part of the yard. We just got back from our new vet here in BG and he confirmed the skin scrapings were positive for mites. Were going to do a 4 mo treatment with ivermectin since the dip would be toxic in regards to the twins who she is a big buddy/leaning post to. Patches were just starting to show on her muzzle and the vet says we got here in in the early stages so it will probably clear up after this first round of treatment. Ironicly he brought out his old vet school book to show us what a bad case looked like and the dog in the artists depiction was a dobe  .

I did a forum search and didnt turn up much recently on the subject but for those of you who have dealt with this how the heck do you hide the ivermectin? I tried mixing it with beef broth but that didnt seem to work and then I had to chase Annabelle around the house and give 15ml of mixed broth.

Is it liquid? That's simple. Draw out what you need. Grab up the dog. Open mouth and squirt it in. Then be nice and give her a marshmallow.

Try using the plastic syringes and just squirt it down her mouth. You should be able to buy one at Wal-green's, Rite Aid, Wal Mart, etc.

Sorry poor little Annabelle is itchy. It's good you caught it right away, hopefully she will clear right up.

It matters to the one you save.

Hope all will be well with Annabelle soon. I agree with Arda and Sarah, just get a syringe and squirt it in the inside of her cheek and all will be good soon.

Poor baby

Plastic syringes are good, my vet usually will give me one
if needed. juat kind of pull the cheek away from the
teeth and squirt it in...easy as 1 2 3. A pill I just open the mouth
and down the hatch. Never had mites, but have given many meds
for other things. Good Luck

The vet gave us the syringe. I resorted to the squirting method after she wouldnt take it mixed with the broth but I had to catch her 3 times to get all the broth mixture in her mouth. Talk about an unhappy pup.

I had to look up Demodectic Mange to see what it was. I found an interesting article at: http://www.marvistav...ctic_mange.html

An excerpt from the article sounds quite encouraging for Annabelle:

JUVENILE ONSET -- Young dogs have inherently immature immune systems and are thus susceptible to the development of demodicosis without any sinister underlying diseases. As they grow up and their immune systems mature, they tend to naturally gain control of their mite infestation; in fact, 30-50% of dogs under age 1 year recover spontaneously from generalized demodicosis without any form of treatment. Usually treatment is recommended, though, to facilitate recovery.

Hugs to sweet Annabelle.

My very first dobe, Tank, was a shelter dog when I adopted him. He was around 8-9 months old and he was diagnosed with demodectic mange a couple months after I had him. I had to give him "facials" and massage the medicated cream into his face, chest, and front legs every day. Seems I had to dip him once or twice too. This was back in the early 90s so the treatment is probably different now, but it worked well. He never had another outbreak ever. I would do exactly what you are doing and give the ivermec. Just squirt it into her mouth and hold it shut for a few seconds. Give her a treat, such as Arda's suggestion of a marshmallow :Drooling: right afterwards. She'll do just fine :Four Leaf Clover:
