I made this quilted wallhanging to raise money for SCD. The center motif is an iron on transfer, applied using a commercial heat press. The quilted hanging is made of cotton and/or cotton blend fabrics. It is machine pieced and hand quilted. It is 36.5 inches X 36.5 inches. It has tabs sewn on the back that accepts a wooden dowel, or a yard stick, for hanging. The winner will have to supply their own stick, as it would be hard to mail one.

This auction will end on Wednesday, January 25, at 6pm. All the money will go to Second Chance Dobes. The wall hanging will be mailed to the winner, as soon as I have confirmation of payment made to SCD. The winner will need to add $5 to their winning bid, to cover some of the mailing charges.

Thank you for supporting SCD.

Lori; Please tell us how much time it takes you from start to finish to make one of these. And PLEASE tell us what it costs to get all the fabric to put one together. Quilting is such an art from the heart. My Grandmother used to quilt. She used old clothing and blankets and put heirlooms together. She did it out on necessity for bedding and we cherish them as heirloom. Especially the ones that had pieces of fabric that we could remember as the table cloth or her dress or apron. They are a piece of her that lives on and on as yours are doing. I think I am wearing the ones you have made me out by just showing them to everyone. I love each and everyone of them and even the ones you don't know I have. Thank you for those pieces of love.

It takes about 25 hours for me to make one of these wall hangings. I don't use a rotary cutter, I make my quilts the old fashioned way...template, pencil & scissors. Each piece is hand cut. Then I machine sew the squares together, referring to my sketch that is posted on the wall in front of my machine, to be sure each piece is sewn in the right place to make the pattern. I make a 'sandwich' with the backing, batting, & pieced top, and safety pin the layers together. Then comes the part I enjoy the most...hand quilting. I have a frame that I put the 'sandwich' in, and start stitching, moving the frame as I finish a section. My frame is about 20" square. I use a ruler and disappearing quilt marker to be sure my stitches are straight. Once the hand quilting is done, I cut and piece my bias edging together (again the old fashioned way...using a yardstick, pencil, & scissors), to make a long strip, and sew it with the machine around the edge of the quilt on the right side. Then I turn and sew the bias edge to the back of the quilt by hand. As far as how much the fabrics cost, I don't know. I generally buy my fabrics and battings ahead of time, when I can get them on sale, and I stock pile (hoard) them in my sewing room until I have a use for them. Sometimes, though, I have to buy fabric at regular price to get the color and pattern I want, if I am making a special quilt for someone.

My Grandma also made quilts out of necessity. She loved making Crazy Quilts, because she could use her fabric scraps to make them. One year, about 40 years ago, she made 10 Crazy Quilts as Christmas gifts for everyone in the family. I have mine stored away, and if I am sick I get it out and wrap up in it, it always makes me feel better.

Beautiful work, Lori and it sure is a art, you do wonderful work. I too have several quilts that my grandmother made, they are so nice and what a great memory of her.
Thanks for explaining the steps involved to make one of these beautiful quilts.

I would also like to add that just as our Grandmas, and Moms, made quilts out of love, so do I.....for the love of a Dobermann. :doberman:

If it weren't for SCD, I wouldn't have known the love of 7 Dobes and our foster girl, Isabel....I enjoy being able to sew my quilts of love to raise money to help the Dobermanns awaiting their forever home. :icon12:

Trust me Lori, I appreciate all that work more than you will ever know. And the furkids love to eat too. The things you do help to cover some of the $700 - $800 feed bill every month. It really helps.
