How terrified should I be about soft coughing at night only (so far) . Kingston is 9 and has started coughing only at night or when sleeping. He's not a very active dog because of the severe Dysplasia and the fact that he's a giant old man...

I'd have his heart checked.  He's the right age for problems.  Could also be allergies.  Dusty room and etc.

Okay. It's very new and I did put a bunch of mulch out in the back yard. Thank you.

The dust from mulch can cause a big problem.  It makes me cough.

Yeah, not wanting to alarm you too badly, because a cough can stem from many different causes, but with the prevalence of DCM, and knowing that a cough is often one of the first symptoms, I too would want to have a cardiac checkup on him.  Good luck.  I hope it turns out to be something minor.

There also was mulch back in 2013 that was toxic to dogs. It is under health and education on page 2.

If you want to read the info on it. Good luck with Stella, hopefully it's not her heart and just a allergy.

Jill it was freshly chipped Wood that sat so it was musty and dusty. My sis is coming to listen to his heart and lungs this week.

Jade had it.  Karma has it.  Seems like we can't get away from the heart aches with these dogs.  Soooo sorry about Kingston.  The jacket that I got for them with a handle on the back to help when they are going up and down steps or just getting up is a "Ruff Wear".  I got them on line somewhere.  Been a long time ago.  I think they are gear for hiking.

I ordered one that Sarah helped me find. Hoping we have a couple more years of him toddling around. I may have to build some ramps...

I know this goes totally against the grain of thought of all the vets I have dealt with over the years BUT Jade was diagnosed about 4 years before I lost her to DCM.  She wore her harness and did have poopy accidents but did her thing and went to the yard and lived a good life.  The other dogs left her alone to waddle around.  Baerba collapsed on me and I had her everywhere for help and nobody could recommend anything.  My favorite vet said his rule of thumb was for cows, dogs, horses, goats, and etc was three days down and that was the end.  So I rigged a swing apparatus up in the front room.  4 or 5 times a day I would rig her up and hang her in this sling thing and move her legs manually.  Did it for a month or so.  And I carried her outside to potty.  One day the phone was ringing and I went back in to answer it.  Where I laid her wasn't where she wanted to be.  And maybe I was on the phone too long.  I turned around and she was in the house.  Took her some time to get her strength up but I had her another 2 years until DCM took her.  There has been many others over the years.  I never leash them from a collar and sometimes I put a cervical collar on them so that they don't lift their head too high.  Feed them from a raised dish.  Never make them raise their head for treats or pats.  Never pull their heads up and some of them have lived some good long years.  Karma was diagnosed many years ago.  She walks and runs with her legs further out for balance but it's been years.  She's 8 now.

It saddens me that we have so many issues with our breed but other breeds have their issues too.  I still live for these rotten Dobes that break our hearts so thoroughly.

I'm sorry to hear about Kingston's diagnosis.  Like Arda says, many dogs can live years with Wobbler's.  I know Kingston is nine, so there is that reality, but I hope he still has a lot of quality time with you.  I know you will be doing everything possible to make him comfortable and happy.

We started prednisone on the vets recommendation and he hasn't fallen since Friday. He's back to his usual perky self and getting around really well. We might try acupuncture but he is a bit of a jerk about some things so not sure if he will let us. I am going to try to do some beach walking and maybe some swimming.

His harness arrived today.

Stella started daycare today so let's hope she doesn't get sent home early... :P
