Hi All!!

Looking for your valuable input, 2 part inquiry:

#1-

Our current dobe Kiah will be 10 in December and was raised with another dog, but she has been the only dog in the house for the last 4 years.  We brought home a 10 week old male last week.  We introduced them quietly and she was initially quite scared of him and his quick, bouncy movements, was avoiding eye contact and would move to another area away from him when she felt he was too close.  She has since stopped these behaviors and has even allowed him to lay on a blanket with her for a few minutes.

When we allowed them short/supervised play time outside she would play bow a few times and then go about her business but she was "foaming" at the mouth and drooling.  She is now also suffering diarreah for the last 4 days and the last 2 days would not eat her food, but did eat some rice and boiled turkey yesterday afternoon.

I'm giving her immodium, pepto and probiotics and did not feed her dinner or breakfast this morning (she was not looking for food either).  Any suggestions on how to resolve the diarreah?  I'm contimplating taking her to the vet today or tomorrow for a shot (she is prone to stomach issues now and again and has received an injection in the past to stop the diarreah).

#2-

New puppy takes crying/whining in his crate to a whole new level!  I have had several puppies over the years and I know that crying is to be expected, but he goes full blown nuts!  Screaming/frantic/howling/deep growling etc.  To date we have tried ignoring him, giving a kong stuffed with treats and other toys, put one of my old shirts with my scent in there, radio on, hidden treats in the crate to find (which he does not eat), feed and water in the crate and when it's time for him to come out of the crate I do not let him out until he quiets and sits down.

I think this separation anxiety and crying/screaming may be part of what is upsetting our older dog!  We are walking nightly with them together to help establish the pack also.

There is probably more, but I'm so tired from being up every hour to let her outside because of her upset stomach that I can't think straight!  lol

What do you suggest we try???  Thanks as always!!!  Everybody loves pics...so here are KC and Kiah :)

Two beautiful dogs!  Kiah is a gorgeous redhead, and that cute pup looks like he is going to be big!

Is Kiah doing any better with the diarrhea?  It does sound like the stress of having a new puppy join the family might be contributing, especially if she is prone to digestive upsets.  My general rule of thumb is about three days for diarrhea or vomiting, then if there's no improvement, I will take them to the vet.  Sooner if it's accompanied by blood or if the dog seems otherwise sick.  And I also use plain boiled rice and chicken (turkey is probably fine, too), as a bland diet while they're recovering.

The pup and his crate issues is a tough one.  I don't have a lot of experience personally.  I've raised only three pups in the last 25+ years, and I seem to remember each one putting up a fuss the first couple nights, but they got used to it pretty quickly.

Sounds like your guy is going to be a bit more challenging.  What you describe that you're already doing are the usual steps advised.  There are some good resources out there about crate training.  You might try searching on YouTube for "Crate Games Susan Garrett."

It might be helpful for us to know a bit more about when and where he is crated.  How long is he in it during the day?  Where is the crate located?  One reason I'm curious is because you mentioned the term "separation anxiety," and so that's got me wondering if he's putting up a fuss just because of being confined to the crate, or if it's only when he feels like he's been left alone, etc.

I sure hope some other members with more crate training experience will chime in.

Try putting a blanket over the front of the crate.  Sometimes it works.

For the diarrhea we use metronidazole.  Almost all the dogs coming in here have a problem for a few days.  There's a lot of dogs here and it can get noisy and nerve wracking to some of these dogs coming from nice quiet homes.  I use metronidazole by the bottle.  Can't be without it.  I trip to the vet is also very good idea.  Put yourself in her shoes, she was No. 1 and all of a sudden you bring in a noisy little brat.  In her mind he's an intruder.

The metrodionzole is a great idea. Be very careful with immodium as it will dry up the intestines. Make sure she is drinking a lot of water when she takes it. I only use it once (even for myself) since it never gets to the real issue. The turkey or chicken or hamburger with brown rice is a good idea also. Ah puppy is so cute! What a good looking pair. Good luck, this will be fun soon! Linda

SO cute!! Where is he crated? When I bring a new dog home I put the crate right beside my bed so they know they're not alone and cover the crate with a blanket except the side facing me so they can see me. I did have one foster that screamed in the crate and for two nights I put the crate in the back room so that we could sleep. After that she was fine and didn't complain about being in the crate unless she could 'see' us walking around. I guess the equivalent of letting a baby cry itself to sleep? I haven't had trouble with most dogs that I've had through here (fosters/dogsitting/etc.) but my mom's beagle would go absolutely frantic in the crate and shredded a plastic crate pan so we would babygate him in the kitchen. :( Your dogs are adorable!!!! That puppy looks like he's going to be big!!!

For diarrhea I use 100% pure pumpkin 1 table spoon in with their food and it works almost every time

within 2 days. I also do the boiled chicken and rice.

I also use a blanket over the crate to stop them from barking. Is KC relaxed when you put him in the crate or still full of energy?

If they are calmed down and relaxed before you walk away, this sometimes helps. So that they see it as a relaxing place to be. If the dog is barking at you when you are walking away he is to excited for you to close the crate or walk away .If your stressed so is the dog.I hope this helps some.

They are both beautiful dogs. Good luck with the crate issue.I only had the barking problem with one of my dobes, all the rest never barked in the crate. They weren't  puppy's either.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you guys!!  We were gone for the long weekend.

Kiah is much better, almost back to normal.  We did take her into the vet and he gave her a shot and some flagyl.  I did add some pumpkin to her food and continued the rice/turkey plus some yogurt (which she loves).  She's no longer acting depressed and has started playing with the puppy :) I am trying to be diligent about giving her time to herself so he isn't always bugging her.  I think camping this weekend helped.  We did lots of walking with them on leash and i had them walk next to each other. By each night they were both so tired (and a little cold) so they cuddled up on the blanket together to sleep!!

As for the crate issues....being gone 5 days definately didn't help this!  He has a crate next to my bed that he sleeps in at night. He doesn't make a peep all night (11 pm to 6 am), doesn't go outside for a potty break, just sleeps all night.  BUT....if I get up to go to the bathroom or leave the bedroom he will start carrying on.  I mostly ignore him, I have given him a verbal correction and I'm going to try a squirt bottle next.  I NEVER let him out of the crate until he has been quiet for several minutes and sits quietly when I tell him to sit.  I don't want to reinforce the barking/howling etc.

During the day when we are gone for work (7am until 3 pm) we put another crate in the garage that is attached to an enclosed area that contains his water bowl, many toys, stuffed kong and potty pads.  (Don't worry, garage has an air conditioner if it gets hot).  The crate itself has his blanket and stuffed animal in it.  I didn't want to have him in the crate in the bedroom all day because i know he will have to potty and i didn't want him to start pottying in his bed.  I leave a radio on pretty loud for him and hide some treats in the area for him to find.  I try to have him tired out when he goes in there, but it's tough because he has just slept all night.

He gets frantic in there because he knows we are leaving.  I've started feeding all of his meals in there to help with positive association.

The kids will be getting out of school in the next 10 days, so someone will be home all summer, but I still want him aclimated to the crate so that I am able to contain him when we are gone.

Should I just keep him in his crate in my room?  Is 2 crates too confusing?  I was thinking of adding a 3rd crate in the kitchen/family room that we could keep him in periodically throughout the day, then he could see us and hear us while in the crate.

Thanks for the up date.Happy to hear all is going good for you and that Kiah's doing better.

Yes it looks like he is going to be one huge boy.

Love the pictures.

I made up some pumpkin and peanut butter balls and froze them. So I have them on hand just in case they get the runs.

You could add yogurt if you like. They love one on a hot day. I give one ever two weeks like a treat. My one male won't eat the pumpkin in his food but will eat the frozen ball with no problem he is very picky.....lol

KC gets his ears cropped tomorrow.  We are looking forward to 10 days of tranquilizers!  lol..... This morning I was brushing my teeth and I saw a flash of him sprinting by with one of the throw pillows from my bed in his mouth!  I am having flashbacks of when Kiah was a pup.  She had so much energy I used to take her for a run while I rode my bike as fast and as long as I could to burn off all of that energy.

The two of them are adorable together like that. I bet this thread is nostalgic for you at this point. Are you still around, Kiah's mom?

There are some new solutions which allow you to get information about and use that kind of information you can make a good decision about this.
