OK enough of the bittersweet and now it's progressed to a thankful Holiday season. Coby was like the Grinch that stole all the holiday food! I don't know whose jaws are more tired from chewing, his or mine. Christmas eve is my youngest son's birthday; have always had a brunch for friends that day to celebrate his birthday. Coby was beside himself with all the people and food! I have never seen a dog move so fast. He's stolen fudge, baklava, buttercream frosting cake, turkey, ham, etc., etc., etc. Friends and neighbors were a constant stream bringing presents for the dogs! Unfortunately, the bag of literally pig legs (ugh!) and the bag of 10 ft. raw hides are hidden and probably will be thrown away. But they got new kongs from mom and nylabones and special organic treats and I forget what else. Even though Coby has been one of the most difficult dogs I have ever had to train, he is absolutely loved unconditionally, considered a joy to our household and we are so glad we have him. This sweet boy is trying so hard to overcome the transition of street dog to a pampered house dog, it is just heart warming to watch and bit by bit he is turning into the spoiled, loved doberboy he should be. We also have a new addition; Aaron rescued an abandoned cat from K'Marts. This cat is so lovable that even the homeless person that hangs out there was feeding him. At first I wanted to scream; like we need another critter in our home. But then I thought, well who raised him to love, respect and rescue critters. Even though I still feel bad about Blue, feel blessed to be able to have and love Gracie and Coby, all the cats and my sometimes sweet boys. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!!

Kudos to you!! Sounds like you always have a bit more room in your heart for another precious life and I do believe Coby is carving a huge spot for himself :)

Happy New Year to you & your Full House & Heart.

I am feeling you. LIke your son Aaron I have a daughter named Mara who saves everything. Last was 3 guinea pigs thrown away on a side road. Then those three had babies...............before that was the kitten at the cemetary that was starved to death. I guess with a household full of 4 inside dogs and 2 inside cats, and 3 human kids and myself and hubby it all gets overwhelming and we clean non-stop, but it is worth it. I know what it is like to have kid like that, and you are right, they learned it from us. That isn't so bad. I would rather them love the animals than kick them like I have seen so many other kids do. Compassion, empathy and love.......glad we all have it.
People like your son, my daughter and us and Arda and her crew and every member of this board is what life is all about. People are always telling us we are crazy for having this many animals ( and I didn't list them all ). But I wouldn't have it any other way and I know my husband or my children wouldn't either. But then I have others' who call us special, I don't think we are special, I think we just do what is right.
I also had to control counter surfer Tessa, who tried to get everything as well, she was eventually locked out of site of the kitchen. Then she was made to do a trick for a treat. It worked out nicely.
From one houseful of furkids to another!!

Sounds like a terrific holiday! The food sounds so good that I would have been right there with Coby - counter surfing.

Amen. My husband came home with two beagles . . . 4-year-old male, 8-year-old female. That makes 4 dogs, 2 cats, 5 horses. God Bless them all.

Grindle is right in there with the counter-surfing group. Try as I might, occasionally I have a brain lapse. I had taken a pumpkin pie out of the oven, and put it on the back burner to cool. Something distracted me (probably my husband calling me from the driveway outside). When I returned, no pie in sight. I mean NO PIE in sight . . . no crumbs, just an empty pie plate.
So don't feel badly, you're not alone.

Here's to a great new year, with hope and compassion on the horizon.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated ... I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.

I can just picture it all. too funny. Princess is just too snooty to do any of that. she just sits and stairs until you are finished and tell her it is okay to clean the plates. she does a real good job.

Thankfully Dude doesn't counter surf. He's tall enough that nothing would be safe. However with baklava I'd be the one counter surfing!

This is exactly what Cocoa does too.
The embedded collars in his neck when we got him and he goes back and extends the gentle paw to the human race. One heck of a dog.

The three second rule applies in our house. If it's within reach, it's gone within 3 seconds.

Dogs don't know about beginnings, and they don't speculate on matters that occurred before their time.
Dogs also don't know-or at least don't accept-the concept of death.
With no concept of beginnings or endings, dogs probably don't know that for people, having a dog as a life companion provides a streak of light between two eternities of darkness

Lexa use to sit right there as it was her place and job assigned to her... stare at me or company eating... then she would be able to lick the plates.. I would clean them a bit with a napkin if it was something that had onions or what ever, just so she could still get the lick..

I have left it on the low glass table and only had to say this certain "Lex dont eat it" walk away and do something, she never not once.. never touched the food...

Once I had a "pan " of stir fry that was just set on the counter from the stove top.. chicken and pineapples and veggies in it.. I went outside and a neighbor kept me out there for a good 20 mins longer or so... when I came in she had jumped up and got into it..spilling it all over the counter...

I was worried more than mad as it had, peppers and onions in it... .. the only time she stole food..

now the filthy, soggy, gross , squirrel spit, mangled from someone garbage bagle pieces that she would discover in the backyard dropped from those dam squirrels..... those were her treasure...

oh the memory of getting a few of those out of her mouth........eeek, gross I am making a face remembering right now...eeek.
