So I've got a lot of leftover Tylan from last year when it was prescribed by my vet for a problem my dogs were having with chronic diarrhea. The instructions from the vet say to give X amount twice a day for two weeks.

Several days ago, one of my dogs started having diarrhea. Gave her a couple of days to see if it would just clear up spontaneously, and it didn't. So on the third day, I started her on Tylan. After less than two full days on the Tylan, the diarrhea is gone. My question is, do I have to keep giving it to her for two weeks again?

I am concerned about antibiotic resistance, and I know this is why we hear that you should always finish a course of antibiotics, even if the symptoms are gone. Is there a minimum number of days I can give it? My vet is out of town right now, and the other personnel at the clinic seem to not be understanding my question, have never heard of Tylan, etc. (When I first got the prescription last year, my vet had to special order it, at my request, since I had read about it on this forum, and nothing else we had tried helped her diarrhea for any length of time.)

When we give the dogs at the rescue tylan it is only when they have diarrhea. We don't continue
to give it for 2 weeks. We never have problems after the 1 dose.

I don't think you have to keep her on it for two weeks. I'm no vet though. I would keep using it for one or two days after the diarrhea stops. That is my completely unprofessional opinion. :P

It matters to the one you save.

I found this on a pet pharmacy website (tylosin is the main ingredient in Tylan):

In small animals, tylosin is not used as an antibiotic at all, but as an anti-inflammatory. It's chief use is for the treatment of colitis. Here, its anti-inflammatory properties soothe the large intestine. While few formal studies have been performed to examine this non-antibacterial property of tylosin, it certainly seems to work in this regard.

As Jackie said, when SCD uses Tylan, it is only given until the diarrhea clears up, sometimes 1 dose is all it takes. I would say if the symptoms are gone, then discontinue using it.
Happiness is a decision.

Usually I give it for the first meal or two here as the water and food is usually different and sets them all off. This place would collapse without it. It has to be used very wisely. Very small amout and I never use it for 2 weeks. If they are sick that long, they go to a vet. Just a dose and sometimes 2.

Thanks for all the quick replies! She's been on it for three days and the diarrhea was gone after the first day and a half or so, so it sounds like I can stop now.

Sometimes that didn't work for Bella, only the tylan but yes, pumpkin (not the pie filling) is an excellent natural way to go!!!

Beau discovered that bird seed will also stop you up!!! I brought the bird feeder in to avoid the storms we had on Monday and Tuesday morning I got up to several piles of seed upchuck!!! And then he was having a hard time pooping later too... That will teach him!!! Goofy dog!!!

Whenever Bonnie has diarrhea. On the 2nd day she gets 1/8 teaspoon of Tynan and problem solved. so far it has worked everytime. Joni I still have the little bag that you gave me for Princess. That shows how few times it has been used.
