My two Dobermans (and every one I've owned previously) periodically get what is known in my house as "eye boogies."  If I see them, I will gently touch a tissue to the inner corner of the eye, and the boogie will stick to it and I simply pull it out.  Otherwise, I'm sure the dogs just shake their heads and they end up wherever, unfortunately, which is why I try to remove them when I see them.

They are always some shade of grayish-white and semi-translucent.  This past week, I have noticed Logan having brownish-colored ones just in his left eye.  They seem to have a slightly different texture, too, and have a tendency to be found stuck to the skin below the corner of his eye instead of just staying in the inner corner of the eye like the typical ones do.  One I removed yesterday had a distinctly red color, and today's is kind of reddish-brown.  I can see nothing else obviously wrong with his eye.  He looks and acts normal in every other respect.

I'm figuring if he is the same tomorrow I will call my vet, but in the meantime I just wondered if any of you have had this kind of experience or have any idea why the eye goop suddenly changed from gray to reddish-brown.

My Moki gets that in his left eye every now and then. But it's more of the brownish color.

I have a ointment that I put in the eye and it clears up. it's called triple-B+cort opht ointment 3.5g

His lower eye lid is also red when this happens. The goop is never red though. Hope this helps

Hope everything is alright with your dog.I would take him to the vet if it's red goop.

Try 20 dogs, that's 40 eyes.  With everything from Swamp swill (black) to egg white (slim).  I live with a roll of toilet paper on my table.  The reddish stuff here is usually sand and dirt that has irritated the eye and made the little vessels bleed from them rubbing the eye on their dog beds and blankies.  It's a long way from their heart and it hasn't stopped them from getting in the swamp or digging up a mole in 45 years.  Deep set eyes seem to collect everything.

In Canada we sell the Polysporin eye drops over the counter.  I can drop some in the mail for you if you want? It's antibiotic drops for things like pink eye.

Well, I thought I had lucked out because he went all day yesterday with no goop at all.  Then this morning, I pulled out a long stringy one that definitely looks blood-tinged.  So we've got a vet appointment for tomorrow morning.  Thanks for the replies, and Stef, thanks for your kind offer.  I'm hoping it's just a minor irritation, but since I've never seen the goop this color before, I think I need the peace of mind of having the vet look in his eye with her special instruments and telling me what she thinks it is and what we should do to treat it.  I'll let you know what I find out.

Arda, it sounds like you could use a special assistant around there just to get the boogies out of those 40 eyes every day!  :w00t:

We saw the vet this morning.  Unfortunately, it's not "nothing," which is what I was hoping to hear.  It's definitely "something," but at this point we're not sure what kind of something it is.  There is a tiny growth that I would say is about half the size of a sesame seed tucked into the back corner of the eye, right where the top and bottom lids come together.  It took the vet's lighted magnifying glass to see it, but now that I know where it is, it's fairly easy to see in good light.

She said the first thing she would think of is a meibomian gland cyst, but that they don't usually bleed.  So she thinks it should come off surgically but doesn't feel this is an emergency.  I'm going to try to get in to see a canine ophthalmologist I used earlier this year when he had a histiocytoma in the other eye.  I would like to get a second opinion on what it might be and what the treatment should be, and if he does need surgery, I would feel better having the specialist do it.  I'm just waiting to hear back from them on when I can get an appointment.

Who are you going to?  I had the same thing some years ago.  Everything worked out OK and it didn't come back.

Well that doesn't sound great but at least the vet doesn't think it's an emergency. Hopefully a second opinion provides more insight

The soonest I can get in to see the ophthalmologist is December 10, about two weeks from now, and that's with a different ophthalmologist, at one of their satellite offices.  To see the one I saw before was going to be a month's wait.

That's okay, my GP vet said she didn't think it was an emergency, and it will give me a chance to see if the ointment helps at all.  Of course, if it suddenly worsens, I'll take him in on an emergency basis, but I hope it doesn't come to that.  I'll post again after the appointment to let you know what happens.

Boy, I went through this a while back when I was trying to find a canine dentist.  It seems like there is a shortage of veterinary specialists, and there are so many fields to choose from.  That might be something to consider for smart young animal lovers who are thinking about their future career choices.

Hope everything works out for you. Moki had a bump on the outside of his eyelid and they removed it that was 3 years ago. There was no problem after they took it off. It was on the lower lid right on the edge in the center and he got a few stitches. I know it's not the same as your dog. Hope the cream works. Moki is in surgery today to have two tumors removed on his lip one started to open up so I rushed him in. These dogs just take are heart. Prayers your way.

Jill, thank you for the good wishes.  I'll definitely keep everyone posted.

I'm so sorry to hear about what you are going through with Moki.  I'm definitely sending prayers and good wishes your way that he comes through his surgery today just fine and has no further problems with those tumors.  Please let us know how it goes.  You're right, these dogs do just get a hold of our hearts, and we will do whatever we can to help them live a good life.

Cheri, I'm glad it doesn't seem to be anything major. Hopefully they remove it with no issue.

Geez, Jill I'm so sorry to hear about Moki. I just said a little prayer for him to come through with flying colors. Let us know how he's doing.

Just wondering how your dog is doing with his or her eye?

Is it getting better?

Logan is doing quite well, or at least I think/hope he is.  I haven't seen the blood-tinged goop in quite a while, and in fact I can't even see that there is anything there just by looking at his eye with my own two (unaided) eyes.  Over the weekend, I'm going to have Rick help me so I can take a good look with a flashlight and a magnifying glass and see if it is still there.  Even when it was bleeding, it was hard to see because it's almost back in the crease of where the top and bottom eyelids come together.  You had to kind of force his eye wide open to see it.  I've been reluctant to do that on a daily basis; figured just leaving it alone will give it a better chance to heal if it's going to.

We do have an appointment scheduled with the specialist on the 10th, so if it is still there, even if it is small, I will take him in and have it looked at.

Arrgghh!  Logan needs surgery.  He had his ophthalmologist appointment today, and she felt it was worrisome enough that it should be removed and sent for pathology.  It is about the same size as it has been but still looks red and inflamed.  Fortunately, it is tiny at this point and he should not have too much discomfort from the surgery.  It's the lab report I'm dreading.
