Ok so I recently took my dog Nellie to the vet (last thursday) for her yearly boosters...My vet told me that there was a study on the DA2PP vaccine and the study showed that it is now only needed to be done every 3 years...just like the rabies....Has anyone else heard of this? So the vet said all Nellie needed this time was her rabies and the Lepto booster....and of course her heart worm preventative....

The AAHA, American Animal Hospital Association, updated their "Canine Vaccination Guidelines" in 2011. Since about that time, most vets suggest revaccination every three years instead of every year. My vet is one of those. I've taken it one step further, though, and a few years back I started having my vet do titer testing instead of revaccination. In a nutshell, titer testing tells you if your dog still has antibodies to certain diseases. Mine did, so they are protected and I chose not to revaccinate.
The exception is rabies, which is required by law, and so mine get their rabies vacs every three years. Some states have a medical exemption for old or ill dogs. Unfortunately, Michigan does not.
The core vaccines, including rabies, have been shown by what is called challenge testing to be effective for way more than just a year or even three years. On the other hand, some vaccines, like lepto, have been shown to only be effective for six months or so.
There's a lot of information out there. A number of years ago, I had learned about the issue of overvaccination of our pets, and I did a lot of research and studying. Unfortunately, I am unable to post links here on the board. Some days I can; lately I cannot. Must be some glitch with my computer. But even the most general search terms, like "canine vaccination guidelines," will give you a lot of reputable sites. Some names to perhaps search for are Dr. Ronald Schultz, Dr. Jean Dodds, or the AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines, which is a pdf of around 40 pages and has a lot of scientific jargon, but if you scroll through it you can find their tables of guidelines.
I'm not anti-vaccination. I strongly believe that puppies and adult dogs with an unknown history need to be vaccinated. I also believe children should get their vaccinations. But over-vaccination has been shown to cause problems, too, and I just don't think we need to give certain vaccinations every year. We don't do that in humans, except for the flu vaccine, and that's because the virus is different every year.
All this is just my own personal beliefs on the subject based on what I've learned. Each one of us has to decide what feels right for us.

I will continue to push for titres - I don't believe in over-vaccinating either.

I also do the titer testing, its a bit pricey, I have it done every other year and out of 3 dogs, none of them had required revaccination EXCEPT for lepto, lepto is a "bacteria" and there are several strains of it, so it's not like the other viruses that a dog can build an immunity to (I may be wrong, but this was my understanding).
My dogs didn't keep any immunity to it, per the titer testing, so they had the lepto shot done every year. Prior I didn't think much of it till a met someone whom lived in the Midland area whose dobe got very sick, it took them over a month to figure out that the dog had lepto and by then the dog's kidneys were so damaged that they couldn't do anything to save it.
The dogs get the required rabies, and my guys have been on the year around heartworm (cause I got burned once and coughing up $$ for treatment was an ouch!)
But I agree with Cheri, it's important that puppies/dogs are inoculated to set the base line, and then doing what your comfortable with.

It's been three or four years, now, since the first time I asked my vet to do titers instead of revaccinating every three years. I was the only person who had asked up to then, and the last time I was in, I asked if she had any other patients doing it, and she didn't think so. (It's a multi-vet practice). There are a number of labs doing the titers now, and it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg, but it is probably still more expensive than the vaccination.
