I have a friend- Heidi who never fed raw till she got
her new puppy- Gabriel( some of you saw him at Cobo).
He was raised on raw & very little kibble except the Dick
Van Patton dry. Heidi could only get the kibble at K9 spec.
in warren & expensive$$. Breeder gave her the number for
the butcher place in ohio that sells the chicken & beef. The
chicken is backs & the beef is all ground up & has flax seed,
veggies ect in in. Is pricey tho, for 3 weeks is like $93 delivered
to you. She said the chicken/beef is all natural, no chemicals,
steroids ect. I must say the 2 dogs look great on it. She gives
raw bones too.
I just cant bring myself to feed raw chicken, cook it first & take
all the bones off. I do make the raw hamburger balls & chop
up carrots, some fruit, potatos & sprinkle parsley on their food.
Vitamins- C, Brewers yeast,fish oil.

Carolann has been doing this for a long time. She can get more life out of a dog than anyone I have ever known. Princess lived many years past her exspected life because of the care Carolann gave her. Now you are talking pros. She is a pro at raw diet.

She recommends the book that I use for my two. I've visited her site a lot and thought about having her consult on the diet I'm currently feeding.

Very impressive site!

Which book is it that you have, Stef? I just sent her an email. I think I'm going to do an online consultation. :pinch:

I belong to that Yahoo Group they use. I really like the selection of products and the prices are pretty good. I am going to order some femur bones for my brats b/c they chew through anything else way too fast. Those are about the only recreational thing I give them b/c they take hours to chew instead of 5min!

Neat site for feeding raw food diet. Even gives a sample diet.

Starting tomorrow I am cooking for all of my animals, I made the decision today. I have all of that deer meat, I may as well put it to good use. Plus I get all the free turkey that I want.
Dogs will love it and I won't ever have to worry again!

I admit, I haven't read all the web sites posted, but I worry about e. coli and salmonella contamination with raw food . Its especially concerning after reading about FDA skiipping inspection of meat plants. Plus, I don't think I could handle alll that raw meat in my kitchen, even though I realize their dog food comes from animals

I sometimes forget to tell you things that float around in my head. And I know some of you out there have not been with us all that long. So, I wanted you to know that Carolann is in NewFoundland and we have shipped two rescue dogs to her over the years. The last was My Love. A litter mate to Tux and Draeko. So Stef say hello to Tux's sister and she has been fed raw diet since she arrived in NewFoundland. I will privately tell you the rest of the story. I don't want the world to know I'm nutz.

I just can't handle the liver - it grosses me out. :pinch: Fortunately I found out I can buy it sliced so I have very little to do with it at all. I thought heart would be gross but it's just like steak - I can't believe how solid and thick the walls are! (I've learned lots about meat feeding this way ... then of course the learning curve was pretty steep since I don't eat the stuff myself. )

Don't forget that the meat is very fresh when you're feeding raw. Most people seem to buy a 1/4 to 1/2 cow at a time, but even if you're just feeding from the grocery store - the meat is all human grade and fresh due to FDA regulations.

Dogs have much stronger stomach acid and are capable of dealing with the bacteria that is on the outside of meat. (Dogs that have a compromised immune system are a different situation.) I pour boiling water over chicken, but I don't worry about the beef. The apple cider vinegar that I add to their meat meal also kills bacteria.

I worry about chicken and I don't feed it very often but honestly I don't think about it any other time.

Still doing some research here and am finding that going totally raw is going to cost me about $350-400 a month to feed my four dogs (Two Dobes, a Weimaraner and a German Shorthaired Pointer). Right now, I spend about $100 a month on them for three bags of Canidae ($28 a bag), their supplements (Vitamin E, Flax Oil, Vitamin C) and some mixed veggies and berries that I make a veggie mush out of. I've been giving them raw meat when I find it on sale or if my dad or brother drop off some venison (we can't stand the stuff!).

Not only do I not have the space to buy in bulk, I don't think I can afford to go totally raw. :D
