I do agree. Two is better than one, except for when you have to take them to the vet!
The embedded collars in his neck when we got him and he goes back and extends the gentle paw to the human race. One heck of a dog.

I've learned that that usually does the trick!!!!!

I live right between flushing and montrose, and a friend of mine said that they do have a dog park in Flushing that was just opened this past summer - so if you are interested, let me know and I can find out more info for you - I haven't been there yet. Also, we have three dogs and a fenced in back yard if you ever want to bring her over for some play time - the flushing township park is also right next door with lots of walking trails.

Is an american feist like a mountain feist? Just curious because we have a mountain feist and don't hear that breed very often.

Lorraine

Sky is still pretty shy except when whe wants to be scratched. She likes to touch her hind end on your leg to get you to scratch her and lays her head in your lap to scratch behind her ears. She won't play no matter what we try and paces the house whining. I think she misses other dogs and is lonely for them. She ignores any toy we bring but bounces like a bunny on her leash just wanting to run full tilt and chase squirrels. She already knows which trees they live in and spots them right away.

We have an acre but no fence so she is confined to a leash when we take her out. We're thinking about an electric fence just so she can run. My brother has one and it works well for his dog (Chesapeake Bay Retriever) but his dog is quite high strung.

We think it would be good for her to have friends (her own pack). We will take her to my brothers soon to introduce her to his American Feist (the CBR will be too much for her I think) and my sister has a black lab that Sky will meet on the 15th. There are no dog parks by us so we are racking our brains on how to get her some room to run. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A feist is a type of small dog developed in the rural southern United States for hunting squirrels and other small game. Feists are generally bred for their hunting ability, not as show dogs, so there is little to no consistency in breed characteristics. Only the Treeing Feist has been recognized as an identifiable breed, by the United Kennel Club, in 1998.

The ancestral homeland of the Feist is the Southern Appalachian and Ozark Mountains. The Feist is also more specifically known as Mountain or Treeing Feist, used interchangeably by many. Many Feist dogs are the product of generations of selective breeding while some are first generation crosses of other widely-known breeds.

The Mountain (Treeing) Feist may not be widely known, but it is not a new breed. Written accounts of the dogs go back centuries. Abraham Lincoln wrote about them in a poem, "The Bear Hunt". Reference to them is included in the diary of George Washington, and a Feist is also featured in William Faulkner's "Go Down Moses". It is uncertain how long Feist dogs have been in America, but it is generally accepted that they played a vital role in the lives of early pioneers, as did their larger relatives, the Curs.

I didn't hear about the dog park. I knew they built a dog/walking path that goes down behind Bueche's. Sky is getting more playful but only outside. She definitely wants to run. We plan to get an electric fence early next year but until then, she's stuck on the lease, bouncing like a bunny. You must be somewhere off McKinley. We aren't too far from you and I'm anxious to get her socialized back with other dogs and people. Holiday times are pretty hectic but perhaps we could find a date. Our e-mail is Reid48433@aol.com. Drop me a line if you're interested.

Sky loves: ear scratches, butt scratches, snausages, getting out of her crate, chicken, taking showers
Sky doesn't love: going back into her crate in the daytime when we leave
Sky is unsure or doesn't know: cats, dog toys, stairs, everything else

Buddy hated going in his crate at first. We bought Kong toys and we only give them to the kids in their crates. I put special treats in the Kongs that they don't get any other way also, such as apple chunks, and yogurt. Now he will go running in the crate as soon as you open the door, because he associates it with getting his Kong. Something like that might help Sky with disliking her crate too. It doesn't have to be a kong, a bone or a special toy works too.

The walking path behind beuche's is great - actually good for rollerblading too if you can do hills. I found the dog park listings on doggeek.com, so here is the info.

Woof Woods Dog Park

Dog Park Info: Two acres fenced area. Twelve acres of wooded trails. Agility course. Membership fee 35.00 per year, and 1.00 per visit. Open 9:00am to 9:00pm 365 days a year.

I sent you an e-mail also.

That's a great idea. It'll be a good use for the chicken or the snausages. She still doesn't know what to do with toys though. She definitely needs a rawhide though. She walked through the kitchen last night, reached down and bit off the edge of the base molding, the little buggar. Thanks for the tip!

You might want to try a natural bone too. Dude likes them more than a rawhide. We get his at PetSmart, it is a cow's shin bone they have them for $3.99.

That's a good price for a natural bone. I'll have to check them out for you know who!

Got a couple of GREAT beef soup bones at Hollywood Supermarket; neither one was more than $2.00. Just boil them for about 20 min. Last forever and the dogs just love them.

Never. Just ask the butcher at your local grocery store to cut a marrow bone for a large dog. It usually cost me 25-50 cents. I actually microwave mine and then let them sit for a while. MMMMM

Does it leave residue on the floor where they chew it?

If you boil them does it boil away the marrow? I usually just give them to the dogs, but I've worried about the whole "raw" meat thing.

I give my dogs raw beef bones all the time--marrow and chunks of meat intact! :flower: They love them and I've never had a problem with a sick dog or the runs from them. I usually buy several at a time and store them in the freezer and serve them frozen. Be sure you get chunks of cannon bones, not beef knuckles, though. I either buy large soup bones from the grocery store or 6" cannon bone sections when available (haven't gone to the butcher to ask for them yet). I don't have carpet so don't have to worry about stains. The dogs usually have them pretty clean within a few hours. :sorcerer:

Great makes me feel better - the whole raw meat thing all over my floor doesn't make my husband too happy, but they do love it and they chew them for months. I get them from Westborn Market in Dearborn, they always have a big stock of them in the back frozen. I pay around $2 per bone.

I give them to mine raw also in the summer when they can enjoy the mess outdoors :sorcerer: . I boil them just to clean them up for the house. The marrow inside just cooks up to a brown color, but the dogs get it out somehow. I'm a clean freak Bumpster, and I haven't had any marks on the floor from them after cooking them down. Once they clean out the marrow, sometimes I'll smear some peanut butter inside and I'll even freeze it like that for them, but that's usually an outside treat.
