They have found that the whites and people with albinism share a similar gene.

It's always nice to have scientific evidence to support what the DPCA and the majority of Doberman fanciers have been saying all along, that these dogs are albinos, not just whites, and it is caused by an undesirable genetic mutation that carries many health risks in addition to those already common in the breed.

Being involved in rescue, as those of us on this board are, of course we don't discriminate based on color, and we want to see homeless Dobermans of all colors find forever homes; but hopefully studies like this will cause potential Doberman buyers out there to think better of actually seeking out and purchasing an albino Doberman.

Currently part of my treasured family and helping to make life fun and busy:

Hunter, the chocolate Labradeagle (or Beaglador)

Terra, the tall, gorgeous red Doberwoman

Bartoe has been out here several times collecting data on some of our kids.  Glad to read some of what they are doing.

They published the actual study and they thank you in the comments Arda!

" We wish to thank a number of people for their invaluable assistance with this project: Arda Barber and volunteers at Second Chance Dobermans and Valerie Carlson and volunteers at Illinois Doberman Rescue for providing access to a large number of rescue-owned and client-owned WDP and SDP; Ken Robbins and Mr. Pearl for initially bringing this condition to our attention; Sarah Schroder for preliminary work on RNA extractions; Dr. Joe Hauptman for consultation on statistical analysis; and Dr. Dodd Sledge for providing the dermal melanoma image from a control dog used in Figure 3."
