Our neighbor has a black walnut tree in their yard, a lot of the walnuts fall in our yard. Yesterday he told me that they are toxic to dogs is this true? They have never paid any attention to them but I will collect them all if they are a danger to the dogs.
Thanks
Stephanie

YES!!!!!!!!! i have a black walnut tree in my yard and was told many years ago they are poisonous to dogs. I dont know if its only the walnut itself, or the little leafy branch things that fall also. That one i have to find out. But yes, please pick up and throw out the walnuts. They also are very messy if squished, they stain something awful.

Both the nuts and the wood are extremely toxic to dogs!!!! Never let your dog chew on a black walnut branch. The wood can even be harmful to people if the sawdust of black walnut is inhaled. It's a wood that should never be used where it will come in contact with food. It's harmful to horses, too, and should never be used in bedding.

My husband's grandfather is a wood worker and has a friend whose Italian Greyhound used to come into the wood shop. The IG got ahold of a hunk of black walnut and gnawed on it for a while. It made him extremely sick and caused paralysis for a few days in his legs. Luckily he turned out OK, but it could have killed him.
